The Nonprofit Alliance for Monterey County hosted the “2019 Legislative Update: What Do Nonprofits Need to Know?”
On Thursday, April 18th, Monterey County nonprofit organizations came together to receive a legislative update from State Senator Anna Caballero, Assemblymember Robert Rivas and County Supervisor John Phillips. The event was organized by the Nonprofit Alliance for Monterey County (NAMC). More than thirty-five representatives from the nonprofit sector participated and were updated on issues ranging from healthcare and housing to immigration. In addition to these main topics, also discussed was the environment (specific to water and the state’s New Green Deal).
Senator Caballero’s priorities include protection of farmland, water as a resource, and the environment. Supervisor Phillips mentioned that at the county level he is working to assure that monies from this year’s budget be well-distributed around the county. Additionally, the county board is continuing to work with city leaders to aid with housing, homelessness, and water issues. Assemblymember Rivas shared that he has similar priorities for his job in the upcoming years.
One of the questions from Moderator Natalia Molina was: “What can nonprofits do?” Senator Caballero invited the nonprofit sector to be more involved, supporting bills that will affect their constituents.
